The Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project
Practices

Three Commitments

Participating churches and organizations in Phase II of the Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project have been asked to make the following three spiritual commitments (see Mark Yaconelli's article, "Don't Be Afraid of Us", in the Spring 2002 Newsletter). These commitments represent our strategy for staying grounded in God's love:

Daily Prayer
A daily, ten minute practice of contemplative prayer.
Henri Nouwen once said, "Ten minutes of silent prayer each day will alter your life." YMSP participants were asked to practice either Lectio Divina or silent prayer each day as a way of staying re-minded and re-grounded in God's love.

Spiritual Direction
An on-going relationship with a spiritual director.
Each participant was asked to find a spiritual companion, someone skilled in the art of spiritual accompaniment, who would keep ministers accountable to their own spiritual growth. Find out more about Spiritual Direction & Spiritual Directors International.

Examen on Ministry
A monthly practice of the awareness examen on my ministry or community.
This practice is done with others and involves praying over a ministry event or encounter with youth and listening/looking for moments that God seems to raise up/hold out for prayerful reflection. Participants then were asked to journal this prayer. Click here for the practice.
