For most youth pastors, a ministry to adolescents is typically filled with unceasing activity. Youth ministries are expected to keep students distracted and entertained. Today, however, many youth workers (and adolescents) are seeking something more substantial. There is a longing for deeper, more authentic forms of adolescent discipleship–but traditional approaches to youth ministry haven't left much room for ideas like contemplative practices.

Contemplative youth ministry is an invitation to slow down and receive the young people in our lives. It's a reminder that what young people need most are people who know how to be present to God and present to others. What would it be like if our ministries were filled with adults who not only spoke the words of Jesus but also embodied the presence of Jesus? How would our youth respond if adult Christians engaged youth with patience and transparency?
