The Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project

Summer 2006
  Project Update
We have completed our research for the YMSP and officially closed down our offices at the San Francisco Theological Seminary June 30. Mark Yaconelli will continue to serve as Project Director from home in southern Oregon for another year as he works on a second book about the Project (To be released in spring of 2007).

This second book, Growing Souls: Experiments in Contemplative Youth Ministry is a follow-up to Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the Presence of Jesus. The upcoming book will attempt to share the work of the Youth Ministry and Spirituality Project by focusing more on the actual structure and rationale within the project as well as the experiences of people within the project. In many ways this will be a book of testimonies that gives witness to the previous book on contemplative ministry. This text will bring together scholars, youth directors, pastors and youth who speak about what they’ve experienced in exploring contemplative prayer and presence in youth ministry.

This website will continue to be live for another year, offering most of the resources and research developed over the past ten years of the Project. An archive of research, files and resources from the Project is also available for viewing at the SFTS library.

  Project Update
Mark Yaconelli has completed his first book about the work of the Project, entitled “Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the Presence of Jesus.” Click here to read the Introduction. This long-awaited resource is an exploration of an approach to youth ministry that is grounded in prayer and presence, as experienced and practiced over the past 10 years in the Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project. Full of real-life stories, processes, practices and insights gleaned from our work with ministry teams in churches of every denomination, this fresh new resource in the field of youth ministry offers a new paradigm for thinking about how we do ministry with young people and the adults who accompany them.

“Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the Presence of Jesus” will be published by Zondervan/Youth Specialties and will be available May 2006 through www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.youthspecialties.com. In celebration of the book release, Mark will be doing a 5-city book tour & retreat event this spring. Click here for more on the Contemplative Youth Ministry Book Tour Events!

The book will also be available within the U.K., Australia and New Zealand through SPCK Publishing in February, 2006.

Fall 2004

Project Update
On July 1, 2004, the YMSP transitioned into a “dissemination” phase with a three-year grant from the Lilly Endowment (see cover article in Spring 2004 YMSP newsletter). In this third phase of the project, YMSP staff will concentrate on documenting and writing up discoveries and insights from the past 7 years of work. Currently, Mark Yaconelli and Michael Hryniuk, along five other scholars in the fields of Christian Education, congregational development, and practical theology are finishing final drafts for a book on the project for publication in 2005. Several other writing projects are also in the works for publication in the next several years.

In this phase, Mark Yaconelli will continue to serve the project as Director from his new home in southern Oregon. He is currently on a writing sabbatical through the end of this year. Deborah Arca Mooney will continue to serve the project part-time from an office at the San Francisco Theological Seminary. She is also working part-time for the Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction program at SFTS. Mark & Deborah can be reached at ymsp@sfts.edu or 415.451.2838.

Michael Hryniuk has moved to Canada and is working as a youth ministry consultant, writing and sharing the work of the YMSP with congregations and denominational representatives across the country. To reach Michael, email him at mhryniuk@yahoo.com.
