| The Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project (YMSP) was formed in 1997 at San Francisco Theological Seminary with support from Youth Specialties and funding from the Lilly Endowment. From 1997-2000 the Project worked with a diverse group of sixteen mainline congregations from across North America to test various spiritual exercises and their use within congregational youth discipleship programs. The Project received a second grant from the Lilly Endowment in 2001 and from 2001-2004 gathered together leaders from ten different mainline denominations as well as thirteen "teaching" congregations and six youth ministry organizations to form them in the principles, processes and practices of contemplative youth ministry. Initially this group was called to become teaching congregations, trainers and workshop leaders that would spread the discoveries of YMSP. In 2003, due to financial shortfalls at SFTS, the Project was no longer able to continue its development of teaching congregations. Subsequently, the Lilly Endowment provided a third and final dissemination grant. This grant runs from 2004-2007 and is primarily focused on writing up the discoveries of the Project, archiving the documents of the project, and maintaining this website. Many people have worked within the Youth Ministry & Spirituality Project from spiritual directors, youth ministry scholars, youth pastors, writers, Christian educators, artists, denominational leaders, pastors, musicians and plain old church folks. The churches involved in the project are diverse, and yet at the same time very ordinary. To learn more about the project and the people involved feel free to browse the following sections: |
